Zakiram: Goddess of Wealth

In Tibetan tradition, the ancient and mysterious figure of Zakiram is deeply venerated as a powerful emblem of both safeguarding and good fortune.

This protective deity is seen as a guardian of faith, whose sacred presence is believed to shield devotees from harmful influences and the trials of adversity.

As a respected Dharma protector within Tibetan Buddhism, Zakiram’s iconography represents the steadfast defense and preservation of Buddhist teachings, embodying both spiritual power and vigilant care.

Furthermore, she is a symbol of formidable bravery and resilience, encouraging all who honor her to meet challenges directly and thereby strengthen their personal resolve and endurance.

It is a cherished custom among Tibetan women to wear a Zakiram pendant, as the goddess is intimately associated with attracting wealth, ensuring family protection, promoting health, and guiding one towards a harmonious and prosperous life path.

The Legend of Zakiram:

Zakiram, known as the Wealth God of Zaki Temple, is often identified with Palden Lhamo, the great Protective Goddess of Lhasa. Her origin story is a captivating fable of devotion and power. Long ago, a devout Buddhist woman named Zakiram journeyed to Lhasa alongside a master from Sera Monastery. Her exceptional beauty provoked such envy among local deities that they poisoned her and brutally severed her feet. Demonstrating her supernatural capabilities, Zakiram drew all the venom into her own tongue and replaced her lost feet with the claws of a chicken. Unable to defeat her, the rival deities admitted their defeat. This legendary narrative is vividly captured in traditional depictions of Zakiram, which show her with fiercely wide eyes, a dark complexion, a protruding tongue holding the poison, and distinctive chicken feet.

While Zaki Temple was not originally a site for wealth blessings, it first gained fame for providing safety to pilgrims from distant lands. Many of these early visitors were merchants who prayed for success in their ventures and found their pleas answered with prosperity. Over time, through these accumulated blessings, the temple’s reputation transformed, and it became widely celebrated as a sacred sanctuary dedicated to the Goddess of Wealth.
